Founded in 1958, the Architectural Design & Research Institute of Tsinghua University (THAD) is a leading architectural design institute based in Beijing, China. Approved by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China for restructuring in November 2010, the THAD was later transformed into Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tsinghua University Co., Ltd. on January 5, 2011, with a registered capital of 100 million RMB. In November 2011, THAD was qualified as one of the HNTEs in Beijing.

Benefiting from the rich academic, research, and teaching resources of Tsinghua University, THAD attaches great importance to academic research and the commercialization of technological achievements. These factors jointly contribute to our top-ranking performance in urban planning and design. In 2011, THAD was accredited by China Exploration & Design Association as a “Good Faith Unit in Architectural Design Industry” in first batch and continued until now . In October 2012, THAD was accredited by Architectural Society of China as one of the “Top 100 Famous Architectural Design Institutes in Contemporary China”. In December 2019, THAD was honored by China Exploration and Design Association as “Excellent Exploration and Design Industry”. In March 2023, THAD was named as No. 3 of the “Top 500 Owners’ Favourite (Design) Services Provider” by China Real Estate Association. In March 2024, THAD was named as No. 2 of the “Top 500 Owners’ Favourite (Design) Services Provider” by China Real Estate Association.

The Architectural Design & Research Institute of Tsinghua University (THAD) now has a top-ranking design team with more than 1,300 engineers and architects, including 5 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 4 national design masters, 291 national first-class registered architects, 83 first-class registered structural engineers, 45 registered utilities (mechanical and plumbing) engineers, 17 registered electrical engineers, 48 registered city planner, and 28 consulting engineers. THAD has won nearly 1000 international, national, provincial and ministerial excellent design awards for the projects we have designed and completed, ranking in the front among China’s architectural design institutes. In scientific research, we have participated in national key research and development projects during the 13th and 14th Five Year Plans, major projects and general projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and undertook or participated in strategic consulting projects of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; taken charge of and participated in more than 60 national, local and industrial standards; and obtained more than 220 patents. In 2011, the Ministry of Education confirmed the establishment as a training base for a full-time professional master’s degree joint program. In 2023, Tsinghua University - Architectural Design and Research Institute Joint Research Center for Collaborative Innovation and Intelligence of Architecture has been established with Tsinghua University to further optimize the interdisciplinary Academic / Research / Design platform. In management, we have obtained the QMS EMS OHSMS certificates of CNAS and UKAS.

THAD holds Grade-A Qualification for Construction Industry (Construction Engineering), Grade-B Qualification for Water Conservancy Industry(Certificate No.: A111007707), Grade-A Qualification for Urban and Rural Planning (Certificate No.:21110008), Grade-A Qualification for Survey and Design of Cultural Relics Protection Engineering (Certificate No.: 0101SJ0005), Grade-A Qualification for Engineering Consultancy (Certificate No.: 012022010039), and Grade-B Qualification for Landscape Engineering Design (Certificate No.: A211007704).
