A SKATEPARK BUILT ON COMMUNITY, CULTURE AND CHANGE
In Dubai’s Alserkal Avenue, a new kind of cultural space has emerged one where skateboarding, food, retail, and community converge under a single roof. Gooder was conceived as more than a skatepark; it is a social catalyst and a platform for creative exchange, built on a simple yet powerful idea: for skaters, by skaters. As one of Dubai’s first indoor skateparks, it introduces a new type of urban third space a place where people can skate, drink coffee, work, gather, and engage with the city’s creative community.
By merging sport, hospitality, and retail within a fluid and interconnected environment, Gooder reimagines what a skate space can be, transforming it into a dynamic cultural hub that celebrates youth culture, inclusivity, and the resilience of the region’s growing skate community. The design is driven by a clear ambition to create a platform for connection and positive social exchange. Rather than a conventional sports facility, the project is conceived as an open, layered spatial ecosystem shaped by collective energy. The skatepark acts as the anchor, while retail, food, events, and workspaces expand the experience into a hybrid destination where skaters and non-skaters alike can gather, collaborate, and participate in a shared cultural environment. This approach dissolves traditional spatial boundaries, fostering spontaneity and interaction while positioning the space as a living, evolving part of the city.
Central to the project is the DIY ethos of skate culture its resilience, resourcefulness, and adaptability. Gooder embraces rawness and imperfection, allowing the space to evolve organically over time. Flexibility becomes a guiding principle, embedded in both design and operation. The ground floor retail area, located alongside the skatepark, is conceived as a dynamic landscape rather than a fixed commercial zone. Modular peg wall systems including 3D-printed pegs made from recyclable materials allow fixtures, shelves, and skateboard displays to be easily added, removed, and reconfigured, while mobile elements and embedded floor tracks enable the entire layout to shift in response to exhibitions, events, or changing brand needs. This transforms the space into a responsive platform capable of continuous reinvention without physical overhaul.
At the centre of this evolving environment sits a sculptural fountain that anchors the entire spatial experience. Inspired by the traditional courtyard fountains found in homes in Damascus intimate settings where water forms the heart of daily life and social interaction the feature is reinterpreted as a contemporary gathering device. Its presence also resonates with Dubai’s skate culture, echoing the communal rituals formed around the Deira Memorial Fountain. By linking these references, the design establishes a symbolic bridge between regional heritage and contemporary youth culture, creating a vibrant social core where movement, conversation, and community intersect. Sustainability is deeply embedded within this adaptable framework. By prioritizing locally sourced materials, low-VOC finishes, and collaborating with brands that follow environmentally responsible, certified manufacturing processes, Gooder minimizes its environmental impact while supporting regional production networks. Its modular design eliminates the need for frequent renovations, reducing material waste and extending the lifespan of the space. The integration of skylights and expansive window openings further enhances environmental performance by maximizing natural daylight, lowering daytime energy consumption, and reinforcing the visual connection between interior activity and its surroundings.
In its form, the project reflects the raw, honest language of skate culture through the use of durable materials such as brick, concrete, metal, and timber selected not only for their authenticity but for their ability to withstand heavy use and age gracefully. At the same time, the openness of the spatial and programmatic layout cultivates a strong sense of belonging, offering Dubai’s youth and creative community a safe, accessible environment to gather, work, and express themselves freely. Through this synthesis of innovation, functionality, form, and eco-social impact, Gooder transcends the conventional skatepark model, emerging as a resilient cultural platform one designed to grow, adapt, and evolve alongside the community it serves, with the fountain at its core acting as both a physical and symbolic point of connection.
