"East and West Shadows" originates from Bada Shanren's painting philosophy of "painters' shadows of the East and West." Here, "East and West" refers to the everyday things and objects around us—objects and events we often overlook yet are strangely familiar with—representing the realities we must confront in our practice. "Shadows" are transformations parasitic on "East and West," and we hope to constantly refresh our sense of unfamiliarity with the world through the alienation of "shadows." Of course, "East and West" also refers to the globalized context of contemporary practice; we hope to transcend the boundaries of East and West through our practice, engaging with urban life with a positive attitude. East and West Shadows Studio was founded in 2012 by Zhu Xiong Yi and Wang Zhaoming, and belongs to the Public Buildings Division of CCDI International. The studio focuses on the "East and West" seen and heard in our daily lives, using a "lightweight" design concept to engage in the practice of public life, public spaces, and public buildings.
